His enduring dedication to environmental and social stewardship earned him the Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) Management Person of the Year award.

Hans Sy has built a career marked by both business growth and a steadfast commitment to environmental and social responsibility. While instrumental in expanding SM Prime Holdings into the Philippines’ largest integrated property developer, his defining legacy emphasizes preparing the nation for climate risk and disaster resilience rather than retail dominance.

Sy, the fourth son of the late retail magnate Henry Sy Sr., grew up observing the exponential growth of his father’s empire. He eventually served as president and CEO of SM Prime Holdings until 2016, overseeing the expansion of malls and diversification into residences, offices, and convention centers, establishing the company as a benchmark for growth in the region.

His most enduring contribution lies in pioneering a modern vision of corporate responsibility, integrating the “ESG+R” framework: environmental, social, and governance principles combined with resilience. This commitment to responsible business and community-focused development earned him the Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) Management Person of the Year award.

A vision forged in fire

A personal crisis shaped Sy’s commitment to safety and resilience. On May 18, 1993—his 37th birthday—a fire engulfed SM Makati. Recounting the experience of standing amidst the mall’s ruins, he described it as “entering an oven,” a moment that cemented his resolve that no one, especially employees and tenants, should endure such risk.

The tragedy inspired the creation of SM Prime’s ESG+R framework, leading to groundbreaking infrastructure investments designed to embed safety into the company’s DNA. Projects included flood mitigation measures, such as building SM City Marikina on 246 concrete stilts to allow water to flow naturally, and installing rainwater catchment basins like the one at SM City Masinag, capable of holding millions of liters of water to protect surrounding communities.

His efforts led to his appointment as the only Filipino member of the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction’s Private Sector Advisory Group, where he helped establish ARISE Philippines.

In this capacity, he used SM’s resources to develop and share best practices, helping shape global guidance on incorporating disaster risk reduction into business strategies.

“Kuya Hans”

Beyond infrastructure, Sy’s most significant impact lies in policy and professional transition. Locally, he co-chairs the National Resilience Council, championing public-private partnerships to strengthen community preparedness.

His management style is also defined by meritocracy and humility. In a bold move that surprised the Philippine business community, he appointed a non-family member, Jeffrey Lim, as his successor at SM Prime, prioritizing institutional excellence over dynastic control.

This move allowed Sy to transition his focus to philanthropy. He closely collaborates with CHILD Haus, a shelter for cancer-stricken children, and actively contributes to education as the Chairman of the National University, while also enhancing its sports prowess in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).

Upon learning the shelter was facing eviction, “Kuya Hans,” as the kids fondly call him, personally purchased a parcel of land near the Philippine General Hospital and constructed a seven-story permanent home for the foundation, which he donated on his 60th birthday.

Humility and patriotism

Sy remains a steadfast advocate for the Philippines. Despite political and economic uncertainties, he continues to invest heavily in the nation, urging the private sector to “stay engaged.” Holding only a Philippine passport, he calls it “both a fact and a statement of faith” that the country is “worth the struggle.”

Sy, shaped by challenges like the devastating fire at SM Makati, turned the Philippine mall from a mere commercial space into a refuge for communities during calamities. His commitment to environmental and social stewardship has set a benchmark for corporate responsibility in the country. Through both vision and action, he has shown that business success and public service can advance hand in hand.
