Derrick Rose surprises Cebuano fans with a high-energy public appearance and a basketball shooting challenge.
“Shagit ug kusog!” (“Make some noise!”)
Derrick Rose called out to a packed SM Seaside City Cebu on Wednesday afternoon, August 26, prompting an instant reaction from the crowd. Though the former NBA player retired nearly two years ago, fans welcomed him like an active superstar.
Chants of “MVP! MVP!” echoed throughout the venue as ArenaPlus hosted “Rose Meets the Queen: Derrick Rose in Cebu.”
The event marked Rose’s first public appearance in the city, following an exclusive appearance at the Champion’s Circle Appreciation Dinner with ArenaPlus VIPs the previous evening.
“I feel like I gotta have some type of Filipino in my blood somewhere,” Rose said regarding the reception. “There’s no way I could come over here and get this much love.”

The event marked Rose’s fifth trip to the Philippines and his third as an ArenaPlus ambassador in under a year. The partnership aims to bring major sports experiences directly to fans outside Metro Manila, expanding access for provincial audiences.
“Derrick’s the youngest MVP in NBA history, and his story has inspired millions of fans around the world,” said ArenaPlus head Ethan William in a pre-recorded statement. “We’re excited to bring him closer to his Filipino fans today because that’s what sports do—they bring people together and give us moments we remember long after the game’s over. Today, it’s Cebu’s turn.”
Prior to Rose taking the court, four teams of content creators competed in a 3×3 tournament. Select players advanced to face Rose directly in the “Shoot Like a Legend” challenge, a 30-second free-throw contest.
Rose put on an efficient display, converting 13 of 15 attempts within the 30-second window. The performance served as a quick reminder of the legacy of the former No. 1 overall draft pick, who earned Rookie of the Year honors before becoming the youngest MVP in NBA history at age 22 in 2011.
