Peak-hour “libreng sakay” announced, but “formal ID” requirement sparks debate.
Workers can enjoy free rides on the LRT-2 and MRT-3 on May 1, Labor Day, with free trips available during peak commuting hours from 7 AM to 9 AM. and 5 PM to 7 PM.
The LRT-2 and MRT-3 have announced the libreng sakay to help ease daily travel costs for commuters and recognize the contributions of Filipino workers.
Both train lines will offer free rides during rush hour only—a move that some commuters noted may still add pressure to already crowded stations during peak times, instead of spreading travel demand across off-peak hours.
The MRT-3 specified that workers must show their company IDs to avail of the free ride, while the LRT-2 did not indicate any restrictions. It is also unclear how informal workers—such as kasambahay, market vendors, or construction workers who may not carry formal company IDs—would be accommodated under the policy.
How to secure your free ride this May 1
Heading out on Friday? Here is how to ensure a smooth trip:
- Have your ID ready: For the MRT-3, your company ID is currently the primary requirement. Have it visible to avoid slowing down the line.
- Watch the clock: If you tap in or enter the gate at 9:01 AM or 7:01 PM, you will be charged the full fare. Aim to be at the station at least 20 minutes before the window closes to account for the Labor Day holiday surge.
- Prepare for crowds: Because the discount is only for 4 hours of the day, expect significantly higher foot traffic than a normal Friday. Travel light and keep your belongings secure.
radar advice: If you are an informal worker without a company ID, try presenting a government ID (like a SSS, UMID, or Voter’s ID) and explain your occupation to the station personnel. While not explicitly guaranteed in the current MRT-3 advisory, station supervisors sometimes have the discretion to assist during holiday programs.
A salute to the workforce or a peak-hour bottleneck? MRT-3 and LRT-2 have announced free rides for May 1, 2026, during morning and evening rush hours.
