Peak-hour “libreng sakay” announced, but “formal ID” requirement sparks debate.

Workers can enjoy free rides on the LRT-2 and MRT-3 on May 1, Labor Day, with free trips available during peak commuting hours from 7 AM to 9 AM. and 5 PM to 7 PM.

The LRT-2 and MRT-3 have announced the libreng sakay to help ease daily travel costs for commuters and recognize the contributions of Filipino workers.

Both train lines will offer free rides during rush hour only—a move that some commuters noted may still add pressure to already crowded stations during peak times, instead of spreading travel demand across off-peak hours.

The MRT-3 specified that workers must show their company IDs to avail of the free ride, while the LRT-2 did not indicate any restrictions. It is also unclear how informal workers—such as kasambahay, market vendors, or construction workers who may not carry formal company IDs—would be accommodated under the policy.

A salute to the workforce or a peak-hour bottleneck? MRT-3 and LRT-2 have announced free rides for May 1, 2026, during morning and evening rush hours.
