Philippine financial markets retreated on Tuesday as stocks gave up part of the previous session’s gains while the peso weakened sharply against the US dollar.
Philippine financial markets ended lower on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, as both the stock market and the peso retreated following recent gains.
The Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) dropped 38.08 points, or 0.60%, to close at 6,296.64, giving up part of the gains posted in the previous trading session. The index slipped below the 6,300 level, suggesting the market lost momentum after briefly recovering above the threshold.
Peso returns to ₱61 range
The Philippine peso weakened, losing nearly 24 centavos to close at ₱61.165 against the US dollar, surrendering much of the gains posted over the previous two trading sessions.
The local currency reached an intraday high of ₱61.222, around 15 centavos weaker than the previous session’s rate. The latest finish pushed the peso back into the ₱61 territory, signaling renewed pressure on the local currency after its brief recovery to the ₱60 range.
Tuesday’s session reflected weaker sentiment across Philippine financial markets. While local equities slipped below the 6,300 level, the peso also retreated sharply against the US dollar, suggesting investors remained cautious amid lingering domestic and global market uncertainties.
