Quezon City is ramping up its flood mitigation efforts with the construction of three new detention basin projects designed to temporarily store thousands of cubic meters of rainwater during heavy downpours.

Mayor Joy Belmonte personally inspected two of the ongoing projects on Saturday, one at the corner of N.S. Amoranto and Araneta Avenue, and another at Maria Clara Street corner Araneta Avenue in Barangays Sto. Domingo and Siena.

According to Belmonte, the detention basin at N.S. Amoranto can store up to 2,050 cubic meters of water—equivalent to nearly an Olympic-sized swimming pool. The Maria Clara facility, meanwhile, will have a capacity of 2,420 cubic meters, also close to the volume of an Olympic-sized pool.

A third detention basin is also under construction along Mauban Street corner Araneta Avenue. Once completed, it will be capable of holding an additional 670 cubic meters of stormwater.

Photos shared by the mayor showed the large underground concrete structures taking shape beneath major roads, with construction crews working on steel reinforcements and excavation.


Detention basins are engineered to temporarily collect excess rainwater during intense rainfall, reducing the amount of runoff entering drainage systems all at once. The stored water is gradually released after floodwaters subside, helping prevent streets and nearby communities from being inundated.

Belmonte said the projects form part of Quezon City’s Drainage Masterplan (DMP), which was developed in partnership with the UP Resilience Institute under the leadership of Dr. Mahar Lagmay.

The mayor said the city remains committed to implementing infrastructure projects aimed at reducing flood risks and improving the resilience of communities as extreme weather events become more frequent.
