Dido de la Paz portrayed Doc in “Respeto.”
Dido de la Paz, a character actor best known for starring in the 2017 Cinemalaya award-winning drama “Respeto,” has died. He was 69.
Dido’s son, Jan-B de la Paz, announced his passing in a Facebook post on Saturday afternoon of Nov. 22.
“It is with profound sadness that we inform you of the passing of Dido de la Paz,” Jan-B wrote. “A father, a brother, and a friend to many.”
“Further details regarding the wake will be posted on Monday. Thank you and God bless,” Jan-B added.
“Respeto” director Treb Monteras told radar Entertainment that Dido was such a kind man who remained unassuming and humble despite his stature.
“Ang lungkot talaga,” Treb said in a private message. “Si Dido, sobrang bait na tao. Walang ere, walang arte—totoong-totoo.
He recalled Dido’s audition for the role of Doc, a poet, activist, and bookshop owner who’s nursing trauma over the murder of his wife during Martial Law.
Dido won Cinemalaya Best Supporting Actor for his role, while the film won Best Picture, as well as technical awards: Best Editing, Best Cinematography, and Best Sound. “Respeto” would also see international screenings across Asia, North America, and Europe.
In an earlier Facebook post, Treb said Dido cannot be forgotten.
“Naalala ko pa ‘yung unang audition niya,” Treb said.
Treb noted how Dido didn’t seek special treatment over the course of production. “Walang ere. Walang pilit.
Off-screen, Treb said Dido is a guide who was so generous and who often gave advice—while also maintaining humor.
According to the Internet Movie Database, Dido has over 100 screen credits. His other known appearances were in “Geisha of Death” and The Two of Us.”
Cancer battle
Dido got diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2018, according to ABS-CBN News.
He spent the next few years soliciting money for his medical bills and survival needs, noting he was out of work.
In 2021, he asked the public for support as he was not “out of the woods” yet.
“I experienced the worst night so far. Pain so severe, woke me up at 2am and kept me awake,” he wrote. “As I have no medication I had to cryingly endure it. I have started to feel pain and discomfort from places I haven’t felt pain before. I need medication but have no resources. I would gladly work even thru pain, but there is no work to be had.”
A year later, on March 28, Dido said his cancer was inoperable and had metastasized already.
“Hindi ako makatulog,” he said.
Last January, Dido made a final call for donations.
“I’m reposting because I’m still in need,” he wrote. “I feel so pathetic but what could I do, short of begging on the streets which I’m physically incapable of.”
“I’m really sorry for being a pain,” he added, “but I need help … please?”
Dido won Cinemalaya Best Supporting Actor for his role, while the film won Best Picture, as well as technical awards: Best Editing, Best Cinematography, and Best Sound. “Respeto” would also see international screenings across Asia, North America, and Europe.
