Sophia Laforteza’s latest message to KATSEYE fans has reignited a larger conversation surrounding the group’s workload, online backlash, and how much responsibility management bears in protecting its young artists.

The KATSEYE leader, who is currently on hiatus for her physical and mental well-being, said she has been undergoing treatment and doing everything she can to stay “healthy, occupied, and happy.”

“You can’t pour from an empty cup,” Sophia wrote, as she expressed her desire to return to the stage and perform with her members again.

While Sophia did not disclose a specific diagnosis, some netizens have begun speculating about her mental state, with several connecting her exhaustion to the intense scrutiny KATSEYE has faced since debut—including the backlash surrounding fellow member Manon’s hiatus.

One viral commentary argued that four things can be true at once, “management can be criticized for pushing the members to their limits; relentless hate and internet speculation can take a psychological toll; the label remains responsible for protecting its artists from harassment and defamation; and Manon should not be blamed for the backlash directed at the group.”

The criticism goes beyond whether KATSEYE is simply “overworked.” Fans are also questioning how HYBE x Geffen Records communicates when controversies arise, arguing that a lack of direct and transparent statements can leave the members carrying the burden of addressing speculation themselves.

“HxG needs to swallow their pride and issue a REAL and HONEST statement for the sake of all the girls’ mental health,” one netizen said.

Others emphasized that blaming Manon for the group’s backlash only redirects accountability away from management.
