Theater star Carla Guevara-Laforteza reassures fans about KATSEYE’s Sophia Laforteza following her temporary health hiatus.

The recent decision by KATSEYE leader Sophia Laforteza to step away from group activities comes down to a fundamental human necessity: simple, essential rest.

Following the August 7 announcement by HYBE x Geffen that Laforteza would take a temporary hiatus to prioritize her health and well-being, her mother, veteran theater actress Carla Guevara-Laforteza, opened up about her daughter’s current state.

Addressing fan concerns, the matriarch emphasized that the break is a natural and necessary response to the intense physical and mental demands placed on the global group.

Recognizing boundaries

Speaking candidly about the group’s grueling schedule, Guevara-Laforteza likened the members’ workload to that of high-level athletes, noting that the physical toll and pressure were expected from the moment Sophia joined the project.

“She’s really resting, so don’t worry. This is for her own good,” Guevara-Laforteza shared. She highlighted that Sophia’s role as group leader adds a unique layer of responsibility, as she serves as the bridge between the group and management. However, she stressed that every member carries significant weight within their respective roles.

According to her mother, Sophia’s hiatus was not the result of a sudden crisis, but rather a mature, self-aware decision to pause before pushing past her limits.

“She knew what she was getting into,” Guevara-Laforteza said. “It’s good that she knows when to take a step back and say, ‘Wait, let me rest. Because if I keep going, I might not be able to deliver properly.'”

Supportive management and healing

Guevara-Laforteza praised HYBE x Geffen for validating the young performers’ limits and providing medical support, professional care, and space to recover. Unlike past industry norms where artists were often expected to push through extreme exhaustion, she noted that modern entertainment structures allow performers to communicate when they are mentally or physically drained.

During her time off, Sophia has been spending time reconnecting with simple pleasures. Drawing on nostalgic family roots from her father’s time working in Hong Kong, she has been frequenting Disneyland—a familiar, low-stress environment from her childhood.

Reflecting on her approach as a parent, Guevara-Laforteza emphasized the importance of offering quiet support rather than adding pressure about future timelines or expectations.

“When I asked her what she needed, she said, ‘My body needs to rest. My brain needs to rest.’ And she deserves that,” Guevara-Laforteza said, expressing gratitude to the fanbase for their continued patience as the leader takes the time required to return stronger.

“The Notebook: The Musical” will make its international premiere in Manila from September 3 to 20, at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Circuit Makati.
