The Boys (and girl) are ready for to bow out after nearly 20 years of radio history
For those on the road home or to work, the chaotic laughter and no-filter talk by the three boys—DJs Slick Rick, Tony Toni, and Sam YG (later succeeded by Gino Quillamor and Tin Gamboa)—have been a staple over the years. Boys Night Out, which dominated airtime for 19 years, was almost as old as a full-fledged adult.
In fact, it’s a nightly ritual that probably ushered in many 20-something listeners into adulthood with open discussions about off-the-wall topics that pushed boundaries.
Since 2006, Boys Night Out has been the go-to for life lessons as well as stories that inspire. For a moment, there was even a time when the show acted as a lifeline for one person. DJ TonyToni’s most memorable experience on the show was back in 2012, when the Boys and then-guest Ramon Bautista listened, conversed, and shared the space with Jojo—a man who was on the verge of wanting to jump from a building. For 45 minutes—almost like therapy, albeit very unconventional—the Boys held space for a person who would become a regular listener of the show.
Over the course of nearly two decades of late-night kwentuhan, Boys Night Out grew in its own way. Tin Gamboa, the sole woman in the group, joined in to provide a new perspective so that listeners—both the women who need their own voice in the show and the men who also need to hear the women’s side—would get what they needed.
“I balance them sometimes. It was also a big sign that the show and the hosts themselves were evolving,” Tin adds.
Essentially, every night is a surprise, with most listeners having come to expect the unexpected.
And this was exactly what happened on October 2, when Boys Not Out did not air as per usual. This is why, the month following the abrupt goodbye as the program was taken off-air this month, the Boys (and girl) are coming together for The Last Night Out: One Final Ride. Happening on November 10 at Xylo the Palace, long-time listeners and even new ones may want to celebrate the end with a proper adieu.
“They say you’re only good ‘til your last show,” says TonyToni. “So I feel like fans deserve a last show. I think they deserve a goodbye.”
Join the boys for one last round. Tickets are available as a door charge and a free drink, or check out more details via Boys Night Out’s official page.
