Viral post of a working student sparks debate on parental responsibility.

A Facebook post of a mother proudly sharing her daughter’s sacrifices as a working student has sparked a heated online debate, with thousands of Filipinos split between admiring the student’s resilience and questioning whether parents should ever allow their children to carry such a heavy burden.

The widely shared post showed the student who seem sleepy at the food stall where she works after a long day. According to her mother, the young woman wakes up at 4 AM for school, attends classes until around noon, then reports to her part-time job in the afternoon and works until nearly midnight before starting the same routine again the next day.

The mother said she secretly watched her daughter at work and became emotional upon seeing how exhausted she was.

“Tiis lang muna tayo,” she wrote, apologizing to her daughter while expressing hope that their family’s hardships would eventually lead to a better future.

Instead of simply praising the student’s determination, however, many netizens turned their attention to the parents.

One of the most-liked comments argued that while the daughter’s perseverance was admirable, “Trabaho ng magulang ang buhayin ang mga anak niya.” The commenter suggested that parents should find other ways to earn a living instead of relying on a child who is still studying.

Another commenter echoed the sentiment, saying, “Hindi niya deserve na patayin ang sarili niya sa pagtatrabaho habang nag-aaral,” adding that it was painful to see a parent merely watching while a child carried such a demanding workload.

Others questioned whether the daughter truly had a choice, while some blamed the family’s circumstances altogether. One commenter remarked, “Lesson learned, huwag mag-anak ng madami,” while another simply asked, “Di naman ‘yan responsibilidad ng anak mo, ba’t mo pinagtatrabaho?”

The criticism, however, was met with equally passionate support for the mother and her daughter.

Many argued that the post reflected not parental neglect but the harsh realities faced by countless Filipino families struggling to make ends meet. One supporter wrote that the experience would teach the student resilience and become “isang malaking step ng development niya.”

Another shared his own story of becoming a working student after losing his father at the age of 15, saying those sacrifices eventually helped him become a probation officer. Others pointed out that many children voluntarily help their families, not because they are forced to, but because they understand their parents’ financial struggles.

The discussion soon expanded beyond the viral post itself and into a larger conversation about poverty, education, and family responsibility.

For one side, no child should have to sacrifice sleep, health, and academic life just to help keep the household afloat. They argued that providing for children remains the fundamental responsibility of parents.

For the other, the story highlighted a painful reality that many families cannot avoid. They saw the student’s willingness to work not as exploitation, but as an act of love, sacrifice, and determination to finish her education despite difficult circumstances.

The viral post has ultimately become more than a story about a hardworking student. It has opened a national conversation on where parental responsibility ends, where a child’s desire to help begins, and whether society should celebrate young people’s resilience—or question the economic conditions that make such sacrifices necessary.
