Singer Ice Seguerra uncovers song’s real meaning from lyricist Edith Gallardo

Turns out, one of OPM’s biggest love songs isn’t a love song at all.

In an interview with Ice Seguerra that was uploaded in the social media account of Fire and Ice Music, lyricist Edith Gallardo revealed that “Pagdating ng Panahon” was originally written from the perspective of a middle child, not a hopeful lover.

“Vicor told me, write something that is suitable for a middle child,” she shared, explaining how many middle children feel overlooked between the panganay and the bunso.

So lines like “Pagdating ng Panahon, baka ikaw rin at ako…” and “baka tibok ng puso mo’y maging tibok ng puso ko…” weren’t meant for romance—but for parents. A quiet wish from a child hoping to feel seen, felt, and loved the same way.

And yet, somewhere along the way, the meaning shifted.

“What got hit by those words are the lovers,” Gallardo said.

Honestly… same. Even Ice had to pause mid-convo: “I really thought it was a love song!”

Released in 2001, the song didn’t just become a hit. It became part of Filipino culture. From weddings to karaoke nights to heartbreak moments, “Pagdating ng Panahon” has lived through generations, proving that whether it’s about family or romance, the feeling of waiting and hoping will always hit home.
