Nurturing your business means creating the space for growth and unlocking its full potential.

In the fast-paced dimension of Philippine tech startups, Sophia Sy, co-founder of SOFI AI, is proving the strength of entrepreneurial grit.

Having grown her company by drawing lessons from watching her family navigate financial challenges, Sy offers a grounded, practical roadmap for aspiring Filipino entrepreneurs.

Build values first

For Sy, the foundation of a lasting business is clarity of purpose. This clarity keeps the company from chasing fleeting trends and ensures every decision aligns with its goals.

“I constantly check my moral compass,” Sy told radar Business. “I ask myself daily, ‘Why am I doing the things that I do?’”

SOFI AI creates chatbots for companies and brands, automating routine customer inquiries. By handling repetitive questions, these chatbots free staff to focus on complex tasks, helping businesses save time and operate more efficiently.

“Time is life. More than saving money, our clients save hours which they can use to further grow their business or take much-needed rest,” she said, framing her product as a direct enabler of work-life balance for local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

By grounding the business in service and setting achievable targets for her clients, Sy ensures the company’s growth is organic and sustainable.

Learn to live with failure

The fear of making a mistake often paralyzes action, Sy said. She counters this by embracing a simple philosophy inherited from her father: “There is no perfect business. You will make mistakes, so it’s okay to fail. Learn to live with failure.”

This mindset, shaped by her experience of watching her family overcome trying times, frames failure as valuable data. It encourages swift response over giving up or remaining stagnant.

Sy said that most of her knowledge is experiential. “Everything I know about business comes from my parents, from watching them.”

Lead with authenticity and trust

In leading a young team, Sy rejects the traditional corporate hierarchy in favor of a servant-leadership approach rooted in mutual respect and guidance.

She encourages female founders, in particular, to lean into their natural strengths.
“It’s important not to block your maternal instincts in business,” she said, noting that empathy and nurturing can be powerful tools for developing talent.

She also pushes back against stereotypes of her younger employees. “Gen Zs are not lazy,” she added.

Instead, she finds their challenge is often that they simply “don’t know what to know when.” This challenges leaders to trust their young team and let them take ownership of their roles.

Overcome the fear of automation

While AI is a powerful tool, Sy said that human fear is the greatest obstacle to its adoption. She shared that she had lost potential contracts because middle managers worried automation would replace their jobs.

Her advice to entrepreneurs selling tech is to shift the conversation. The goal is not to eliminate people, but to free them from the “digital manual labor” of repetitive tasks, allowing them to focus on high-value strategy and creativity.

By addressing this fear directly, entrepreneurs can successfully integrate technology and drive their companies forward.
