“Taga saan ka?” “Sa Manila lang”
A simple conversation like this would just spark confusion because when people say “Manila”, they usually mean either the city, the metropolitan region, or the greater region areas. The geography of Manila is complicated and posts online have already presented the different terminologies. To further explain and clear up the air, Manila isn’t just one place, there are actually four different geographies when we actually say “Manila”.
First is the “City of Manila”, otherwise known as the capital city of the Philippines itself. The city of Manila is one of the 16 cities located inside the National Capital Region. It is home to more than a million people and is the most densely populated city in the world. The city is notable for tourist attractions such as Intramuros, Luneta Park, and Quiapo Church.
Next is “Metro Manila”, also known as the National Capital Region. It is a region composed of 16 cities, those cities being; Caloocan, Las Pinas, Makita, Malabon, Mandaluyong, Manila (city), Marikina, Muntinlupa, Navotas, Paranaque, Pasay, Pasig, Quezon City, San Juan, Taguig, and Valenzuela. And one municipality, Pateros. The region is home to more than 13 million people and is the country’s cultural, economic, and government center.
Third is the area known as “Greater Manila”, which is the urbanized region in Luzon that includes the entirety of the National Capital Region and four of its neighboring provinces; Cavita, Laguna, Rizal, and Bulacan. The total population around this urbanized region is estimated to be more than 27 million people.
Lastly, is the area known as “Mega Manila”, this is the biggest geographical division of Manila itself. It spans as far north as Region 3, known as Central Luzon. And as far south as Region 4B, known as MIMAROPA. The region is composed of a total of three regions, and 16 provinces, which includes the four provinces in Greater Manila along with the provinces of Aurora, Bataan, Marinduque, Mindoro Occidental, Mindoro Oriental, Nueva Ecija, Romblon, Pampanga, Tarlac, and Zambales.
Which part of “Manila” are you from?
