The guardian angels by the road.

With the rise of advanced technology, many people now depend on their phones such as Google Maps when travelling or going on a road trip, making it much more convenient and easier to navigate their surroundings. However, it’s better to always expect the unexpected.

What if your device or GPS dies? What if you broke down in the middle of nowhere? What if you don’t own a device at all? These questions prove that kilometer markers across the country aren’t just historical stumps but are still widely relevant up to today.

First, kilometer markers serve as a back-up for navigation. For a long time, these markers contain the distance in kilometers from Luneta Park (Kilometer Zero), the distance from the nearest town or city, and the letter indicating it. Travelers can use these markers to calculate how far they are from civilization or the nearest community especially without any devices and when the cellular signal of an area is too weak.

One could also tell if they are going to and from Manila by the side of the road the marker is placed. If it’s placed on the right side, then they’re heading towards Manila but if it’s on the left side, they’re heading away from Manila.

And second, they can be used for emergencies such as when a vehicle breaks down or an accident occurs in the middle of nowhere. When calling for help among emergency services, the markers will serve as coordinates and can help track you immediately.

Additionally, markers can also be used for sports and events. The markers are often used as a sign of progress or a milestone for cyclists and travellers for how far they’ve journeyed.

Kilometer markers are like guardian angels of the road. Even with the abundance of technology, a simple sign with letters and numbers can actually guide you or save your life.
