The action star-turned-senator will star in ABS-CBN’s “Blood vs Duty.”

Action star-turned-senator Robin Padilla is set to return on television via ABS-CBNs teleserye “Blood vs Duty—but netizens were not pleased with the news.

On April 26, ABS-CBN Studios’ JRB Creative Production cross-posted on its social platforms a 45-second teaser featuring Padilla with the caption, “Ang alamat ng aksyon, Reresbak sa Primetime! Abangan si Robin Padilla bilang Ahmad Mustapha.”

Many commenters immediately disapproved of Padilla’s return—and even ABS-CBN’s decision to cast him.

On X, users criticized why a senator would still take on an acting gig despite his role in public office.

“Aren’t there plenty of skilled veteran actors who could play a Muslim there, right? Is it really just him? Seriously?” one user said. Another user minced no words: “Not doing anything as a senator, and you still had to pick a celebrity. Are you idiots?!”

On Instagram, reactions ranged from frustration to disgust. One user who said he’s a retrenched Kapamilya employee called the decision “disappointing on many levels.”

Public service vs. primetime role

Still, some defended the casting, citing authenticity and lived experience. “This is a very controversial casting given the political climate now, sa totoo lang. But looking at the bigger picture, and setting our political biases aside… Si Robin Padilla talaga ang most sensible at politically correct choice sa role na ito. Muslim, senador na at artista pa,” an Instagram user said.

On Facebook, one commenter noted that authenticity “isn’t just a creative choice, it’s a responsibility,” and casting Padilla brings “truth that can’t be faked, a perspective shaped by lived experience, and a voice that carries real weight.”

A legacy of polarizing headlines

Padilla has long been a polarizing political figure. He topped the 2022 senatorial elections despite having no experience in governance or lawmaking.

He has since drawn criticism for his controversial remarks. In 2024, he suggested that husbands have “sexual rights” over their wives even without consent. Last February, he called today’s youth as “weak” amid the supposed overuse of the word “depression”—unlike his generation in the ’80s and ’90s.

Moreover, Padilla got mixed reactions for his stance on the West Philippine Sea, defense of religious leader Apollo Quiboloy despite being FBI’s Most Wanted for child sex trafficking, and vocal support for former president Rodrigo Duterte, who’s facing charges before the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

“Blood vs Duty” follows a special agent (Richard Gutierrez) fighting a gun-smuggling syndicate led by a family man (Gerald Anderson) in Mindanao. Other cast members include Bela Padilla, Barbie Imperial, and Baron Geisler.

Senator Robin Padilla’s casting in the new ABS-CBN action series “Blood vs Duty” has ignited a firestorm of online criticism. Some argue his Muslim faith brings authenticity to the role of Ahmad Mustapha, while others question the ethics of a sitting legislator returning to showbiz amid ongoing political controversies.
