A charitable gesture ends in frustration when supplies fall short.
Good deeds are always appreciated—but when there are too many people in need, some are inevitably excluded, leading to disappointment and frustration.
Amidst the oil price hike affecting drivers, influencer Russco Jarvina took it upon himself to use his platform for charity—-creating a video working as a gas station boy and giving free gasoline to those in need. Holding up a sign that said, “Free gasoline for Jeep & Tricycle,” Russco and his team serviced hundreds of drivers, many of whom appreciated the gesture. With current gas prices, a free full tank can mean the world to a jeepney driver.
But with the great number of people in need, one influencer can only do so much. As word spread and the station swarmed with vehicles, with both public transportation drivers and solo motorists, the gas eventually ran empty. As they halted the free fuel service, expectant drivers began to complain, with some saying they were hoping everyone benefitted from the free gas.
“What we didn’t expect is that our good gesture to serve the community would have another side to it,” Russco shared. In the end, to calm the frustrated crowd, the team had to retreat into the station and put a stop to the free gas. The team recognized that people simply wanted to take a good opportunity, and apologized for not being able to give everyone free gas despite their generous intentions.
As the clips of angry customers made rounds online, users began to comment on the rude and entitled attitudes of those who complained. Others shared that it’s difficult to do a good deed, as everyone will try to benefit from it. “Kahit puro kabutihan ang ibigay mo, may magagalit pa rin sa’yo,” one wrote.
Ultimately, when everyone turns to a person’s charity in troubled times, the individual suffers as they are stretched thin. What begins as desperation can slowly blur into entitlement, creating a delicate balance between genuine need and unreasonable expectation.
