Singer calls out liability waivers, stresses parents’ trust in schools amid grief over student-athletes’ deaths.
OPM icon Regine Velasquez expressed her heartbreak and frustration over the recent tragedy involving two Ateneo student-athletes, Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, questioning the standard practice of schools requiring parents to sign safety waivers for off-campus activities.

In her social media post on Wednesday, the singer and mother of 14-year-old Nathaniel James “Nate” Alcasid emphasized the heavy trust parents place in educational institutions. “School is like their second home and we put our trust in the institution not only to teach them how to be productive and hopefully be successful but more importantly to teach them how to be Godly,” Velasquez wrote.
However, she firmly criticized the use of documents that seemingly absolve schools of liability during field trips. “The thing that I’m not so comfortable with is signing a ‘waiver.’ Why? The school is responsible for educating our kids, but is not responsible for their safety? I don’t understand!!!”
Highlighting the irreversible pain of such a loss, Velasquez extended her deepest condolences to the grieving families, noting that no legal action can ever replace a lost child.
“I am sure all mothers would agree that even if we sue those that are responsible for any tragedy—a loved one’s life has been lost and will never be returned,” she shared.
“We empathize with the parents of those who lost their beloved sons in the recent tragedy and our hearts and prayers go out to them.”
