A quiet moment of reflection dedicated to our pets who brought endless joy to our lives.
You light a candle. You bring flowers. You stand before a tiny grave in the backyard or an urn inside your home. You whisper your pet’s name and smile through tears.
It feels like All Souls’ Day.
Except today isn’t November 2.
Today is Pet Remembrance Day, observed every July 5—a day that has become the All Souls’ Day counterpart for the pets who loved us without conditions. Just as families remember departed loved ones with candles, flowers, and prayers, pet owners around the world pause to honor the dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, and other companions who were family in every sense of the word.
The similarities are striking. We revisit memories, look at old photos, visit graves or memorials, and quietly say the goodbyes we never seem to finish.
It’s a reminder that grief has no species.
Studies have shown that losing a pet can be just as heartbreaking as losing a close family member. After all, they waited for us at the door, stayed beside us when we were sick, and loved us every single day without asking for anything in return.
That is why Pet Remembrance Day matters. It gives people permission to mourn someone others might dismiss as “just a pet.”
Because they were never just pets.
They were our first hello in the morning, our quiet comfort after a difficult day, and our most loyal friends.
So today, if you once loved a furry, feathered, or scaly companion, light a candle.
Like All Souls’ Day, it’s not about dwelling on death.
It’s about remembering a love that never really left.
