Kim Molina recalls losing grandfather, dog during ‘Wonderful Nightmare’

Actress opens up on grief-filled shoot, channeling real heartbreak into dual roles in Netflix PH adaptation.

Kim Molina took to social media to open up about the heavy emotional toll of filming the local adaptation of “Wonderful Nightmare,” calling it the most difficult project of her career to date. 

While stepping into her first lead role in a South Korean-to-Philippine adaptation, the actress was privately navigating immense heartbreak.

As production began, her grandfather was hospitalized with cancer and tragically passed away before he could see the film. Just a week later, she and her then-fiancé, Jerald Napoles, lost their dog, Unan, to cardiac arrest. 

Preparing for a wedding while grieving two profound losses meant Molina wasn’t just acting from imagination. She was forced to channel her real, lived-in pain for the cameras.

Beyond the emotional strain, playing the dual roles of Atty. Lui Manuel and Jane Alcantara in the film required demanding physical and technical transformations. Because filming coincided with her pre-wedding weight-loss journey, Molina joked that her visibly changing jawline between scenes actually made sense for the dual characters.

Her glam team were also kept on their toes, frequently washing out temporary black hair dye on set so the actress could seamlessly switch between the two distinct women.

Despite the heavy circumstances, the production became a deeply supportive safe space. The crew kept spirits afloat by adopting the SexBomb Girls’ hit “’Di Ko Na Mapipigilan” as their unofficial coping anthem, dancing to lighten the mood before takes.

The project ultimately yielded beautiful milestones for Molina, including sharing the screen with close industry friends and her on-screen daughter, played by child actress Althea Ruedas, and featuring a cameo from her Mini Bichon Frise dog, Itlog, in the official Netflix Southeast Asia promotional photos.

Released just a month after her March 1 wedding, it also became the first movie to proudly display her new married surname, Kim Molina-Napoles, in the credits. Looking back on the production, Molina considers the film a profound time capsule of love, loss, growth, and new beginnings.

In a separate video, husband and co-star Jerald Napoles shared how the actress broke down following immense support for their Netflix film. “Sa mga humahagulgol ngayon sa ‘Wonderful Nightmare’… Si @/Kim Molina na emotional sa pag-appreciate n’yo.”

The 2026 adaptation romcom drama “Wonderful Nightmare” also stars Al Tantay, Candy Pangilinan, Nicco Manalo, and Yumi Lacsamana among others, and directed by RC Delos Reyes. It is currently streaming exclusively on Netflix Philippines.
