Shin Shin was crowned Grand Champion of Alta Citta’s Kiddie Singing Star in Bohol on July 6, 2026.
Hailing from Alejawan, Jagna, Bohol, young singer and multi-instrumentalist Jilean Shain Ocmeja Taghap, popularly known as Shin Shin, is proving that extraordinary talent knows no age.
The 8-year-old Boholana has captured the attention of audiences onstage and online with her powerhouse vocals, natural musicianship, and remarkable ability to master songs simply by listening to them. Though still a child, her commanding performances and emotional delivery have earned praise from music lovers across the country.
Shin Shin’s musical journey began long before she entered competitions. At just two years old, she was already singing Disney’s “Let It Go,” displaying an impressive sense of pitch and rhythm. By the age of three, she surprised her family when she taught herself to play “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” on a piano app without any formal training.
Her innate musical ability continued to flourish. Today, she not only sings but also plays the piano and violin, demonstrating an exceptional ear for music by learning melodies without the help of sheet music.
Recognizing her potential, her parents enrolled her at Jabez Music Center, where she underwent formal training in voice, piano, and violin. Her dedication quickly paid off as she consistently stood out during recitals and received several Best Recitalist awards.
Her rise to wider recognition came unexpectedly after her mother, Diocelle Ocmeja Taghap, a public school teacher, accidentally uploaded one of her daughter’s performances on TikTok.
“Iyung pagka-post ko, hindi ko talaga intended na i-post talaga siya. Ginagamit ko lang iyung TikTok kasi may effects sa mga videos. Ginagamit ko lang yung mga effects doon. E na-post ko, ayun nag-viral na,” she recalled.
The video eventually became a social media phenomenon, introducing Shin Shin’s talent to millions of viewers.
Despite the growing attention, Diocelle said education remains their family’s top priority as they carefully balance Shin Shin’s studies with her budding music career.
Adding to her growing list of accomplishments, Shin Shin was crowned Grand Champion of Alta Citta’s Kiddie Singing Star in Bohol on July 6, 2026.
She also became a viral sensation after her heartfelt rendition of “Banal na Aso, Santong Kabayo”—originally by Yano and popularized recently by Janine Berdin—garnered more than 14.1 million views and over 1.6 million likes on TikTok.
With a rapidly growing fan base, Shin Shin is now taking the next step in her musical journey. The young Boholana is exploring opportunities in Manila and hopes to audition for major singing competitions as she continues to pursue her dream of becoming one of the country’s next breakout vocalists.
