Director Roman Perez Jr. aims to launch new Marvin-Jolina stars via ‘Mommy Guard’

The director says the show will launch fresh talents as Marvin Agustin and Jolina Magdangal reunite for lighthearted family comedy.

The goal of producing “Mommy Guard” is to discover this generation’s Marvin Agustins and Jolina Magdangals.

This was shared by producer-director Roman Perez Jr., who revealed that the series, set to air on TV5 in September, will also feature comedians, social media influencers, and bloggers.

“It’s about family, it’s about a mother and her son,” Perez said in a recent interview with radar Entertainment. “Maraming characters, maraming comedians. Maraming Jolina, Marvin ang ila-launch natin dito. Maraming bagong characters, social media influencers, bloggers ang makikita natin sa series. Mag-create tayo ng new family.”

Perez said the idea for “Mommy Guard” was developed and pitched directly to TV5 before receiving the green light from network executive Enrico Santos.

“We created and conceptualized a TV series for TV5 [when the network announced] it was open for pitching. Nag-pitch kami. Na-approve naman ni Sir Enrico Santos, na dati kong boss sa Star Cinema and ABS-CBN,” he recalled.

The project was officially confirmed after Marvin Agustin shared a fun reel on social media announcing that he, Jolina Magdangal, and Dominic Ochoa will headline the series.

“Malapit na ang TV series na gagawin namin. ‘Mommy Guard’ this September na on TV5,” Marvin wrote.

The television reunion comes less than a year after Marvin and Jolina reunited on the big screen in director JP Habac’s 2025 romantic film “Ex Ex Lovers.” It marked their first movie together in decades after establishing successful individual careers.

Perez described “Mommy Guard” as a lighthearted family series centered on the bond between a mother and her son.

Known for directing and producing numerous socio-political and VMX films under Viva, Perez said the series marks a return to the comedy genre where he began his career.

“Ang VMX, ibang-iba ang wave na ’yon noong pumasok ako. Comedy talaga ako galing. Galing ako kina Tito Dolphy and Eric Quizon bago ako nag-sexy (films), so parang bumabalik lang ako ngayon sa light comedy, family, at higit sa lahat mother-and-son relationship na sakto kay Jolina,” he said.

The director also shared that his current focus is on television, with “Mommy Guard” requiring a six- to eight-month production schedule. While the demanding commitment limits him from making films in between, he assured fans he still plans to direct future VMX projects once his schedule allows.

“Sa ngayon focus ako sa mga ganitong series dahil sobrang demanding talaga. Hindi ako makakagawa ng pelikula in between. Pero nagpaalam ako kay Boss Vic (del Rosario) na gagawa pa rin naman ako ng VMX. Okay pa rin kung may darating na comedy na ibibigay sa akin. Pero again, crucial itong three to six months kasi simula pa lang ng pilot,” he added.

Their latest collaboration has delighted longtime supporters who continue to embrace one of Philippine entertainment’s most iconic screen tandems. Marvin and Jolina became household names through films such as “Labs Kita… Okey Ka Lang?” (1998), “Kung Ayaw Mo, Huwag Mo” (1998), and “Hey Babe!” (1999).
