M1ss Jade So uses global Drag Race stage to demand passing of SOGIE bill

‘Down Under vs The World’ finalist calls on Philippine lawmakers to end gender-based discrimination on international television.

M1ss Jade So used the global stage of “Drag Race Down Under vs The World” to call attention to the Philippines’ long-pending SOGIE Equality Bill.

During an episode, the Filipina drag artist and trans woman explained, “We have this bill that is called SOGIE. It stands for Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression.”

“It is related to trans rights. It actually tackles everyone, like in general, even the cis people,” she added.

Addressing Philippine lawmakers, So made a direct appeal, “If nakikinig kayo, tinatawag ko po ang mga nakaupo to please evaluate the bill and let us have the rights that we need.”

The SOGIE Equality Bill seeks to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression, including unfair treatment in employment, denial of services in areas such as healthcare and education, and harassment, bullying, or profiling.

The proposed measure has remained unpassed despite being introduced more than two decades ago. Supporters argue that it would strengthen equal protection and basic rights, while opponents have raised concerns involving religious freedom, academic policies, and women’s rights.

On “Drag Race Down Under vs The World,” she secured three challenge wins and survived the semifinal makeover challenge, advancing to the historic Top 4 alongside Art Simone, Michael Marouli, and Vybe.
