But keeping it clean still depends on Filipino discipline.
A new restroom at SM Megamall’s Building A, Lower Ground Level, has been getting attention online, with shoppers praising the mall for finally giving its comfort rooms a much-needed upgrade.
One Threads user called it a “character development” and joked that after all these years, the restroom had finally gotten its own upgrade, while reminding fellow shoppers to help keep it clean.
The development also shows how Philippine malls are treating restrooms as part of the overall customer experience. Other shoppers pointed out that SM North EDSA, SM Mall of Asia, and other malls have also introduced more modern restroom facilities.
But some commenters said the new facilities can quickly lose their appeal when basic discipline is missing.
One shopper claimed the restroom was already dirty the day after the upgrade despite two cleaners working inside, while another complained about urine left on toilet seats and bowls and the lack of basic cleaning after use.
A new, cleaner restroom can make a mall feel more comfortable and modern, but even the best facilities can only do so much when thousands of people share them every day.
Better fixtures and more frequent cleaning can improve the experience, but the condition of a shared restroom can also change quickly depending on how heavily it is used and how customers leave it.
