DA eyes 60-day pork import suspension to support local pork producers.

Filipino hog raisers could get some breathing room as the Department of Agriculture (DA) prepares to suspend pork imports for 60 days, a move aimed at helping local producers cope with rising production costs.

The order is expected by mid-November following calls to restrict pork imports, according to Agriculture Undersecretary Constante Palabrica.

The measure comes as local producers contend with higher feed costs, which have pushed up the cost of raising hogs. By limiting imported pork temporarily, the government hopes to give local farmers a better opportunity to earn while keeping up with domestic demand.

That balancing act will also be important for consumers, who rely on pork as a regular source of protein. Palabrica said per capita pork consumption in the Philippines currently stands at around 14 to 15 kilograms.

Meanwhile, the DA has allocated ₱1 billion in subsidies for African swine fever (ASF) and avian flu vaccines for small farmers. Guidelines governing the sale of ASF vaccines are expected by the end of November.

The agency is also looking to establish its own vaccine facility and laboratory in Nueva Ecija as part of efforts to strengthen local livestock production.
