Chelsy Aguilar redefines Filipina strength with ‘Bagong Maria Clara’

The singer’s new EP embraces softness, independence and resilience as she kicks off tour with Time Machine.

Singer-songwriter Chelsy Aguilar believes a modern Maria Clara can be both soft and strong.

Her new EP, “Bagong Maria Clara,” explores a broader image of the Filipina, one that embraces being emotional and gentle while also being resilient, independent and strong.

“This project is about honoring where we come from while expanding what it means to be a Filipina today,” Aguilar said. “We wanted to show that you can be soft and emotional, but also resilient, independent, and strong.”

Released Wednesday, Aug. 12, the three-track EP reinterprets the traditional Maria Clara archetype, presenting a Filipina who is confident, self-reliant and willing to express herself.

The title track tackles the changing expectations of the traditional Filipina, while “Miss Independent” focuses on self-sufficiency, ambition and personal pride. “Kaya Ko ‘To,” meanwhile, centers on perseverance and inner strength.

Aguilar also gives the project a distinct musical identity with the help of full live band Time Machine.

The group combines P-pop melodies with live drums, guitars and saxophone arrangements, giving the EP an organic sound instead of relying solely on electronic production.

Time Machine is composed of Jeff Tabios on lead guitar/vocals, Kiko Cañares on bass guitar/vocals, Mac Novicio on saxophone/vocals, Kenneth Pendon on rhythm guitar, and Donn Flores on drums.

The collaboration is also part of Aguilar’s continuing evolution as an artist. She entered the music scene in 2013 as a member of the P-pop group Maria Clara New Generation before pursuing a career as a solo artist and frontwoman.

With “Bagong Maria Clara,” she draws from that background while offering her own take on the Filipina identity.

Aguilar and Time Machine will promote the EP through a series of live performances across Metro Manila and Rizal in August and September.

The tour starts Aug. 13 at saGuijo Cafe + Bar in Makati for the EP launch. Other stops include Dotted 8th Note Studio, Simon’s Place Supreme, TakeOver Lounge, 12 Monkeys Music Hall & Pub, Brewing Point and Eagles Hub Bar & Restaurant.

The band will also perform an exclusive live alt-rock arrangement of “Bagong Maria Clara” during its shows.

The tour concludes Sept. 9 at saGuijo Cafe + Bar, with Cooky Chua and Color It Red joining the finale. Aguilar will also launch her upcoming single “Tagaytay Weather” at the venue on Sept. 4.
