Some Filipino Facebook groups are banning users from posting and commenting under nicknames amid concerns that the feature is being abused for harassment, sexually inappropriate content, and scams.

Facebook only recently allowed groups to disable the use of nicknames when posting and commenting. Many group admins claim that the platform automatically enabled the nicknames feature beginning December 2025, but some groups did not have the option to turn it off.

Before the feature was made optional, some admins chose to automatically decline posts and comments made using nicknames to prevent spam and harassment.

While free speech advocates see online anonymity as an important tool for people in vulnerable situations to openly express their views and participate in discourse, the feature has also raised concerns over harassment, bullying, and scams. For Filipino online communities, the debate highlights the importance of moderation and online etiquette in keeping anonymity from being abused.

Against this backdrop, the “How’s Your Byahe, Bes?” group is one of the first larger Filipino groups to disable the feature on August 9, advising users who wish to post anonymously to send their posts directly to the admins.

Other groups have since followed suit, with many users praising the effort to curb low-quality and inappropriate content.

“Groups (especially the unmoderated ones) are starting to feel like a cesspool because anonymous posting is making a-holes feel too comfortable slandering people,” said one member of “How’s Your Byahe, Bes?”

Members of the “Quarantine Tribute Tips” group also praised the ban on nicknames amid reports that out-of-context and sexually inappropriate content was beginning to plague the space.

The move has also reached local buy-and-sell groups, which have begun to disable posting with nicknames amid concerns over scams.
