Beloved music icon Dolly Parton passes away at 80, leaving behind a timeless, global legacy.

Country music legend Dolly Parton, the singer-songwriter behind enduring classics such as “Jolene,” “I Will Always Love You” and “Coat of Many Colors,” has died. She was 80.

Parton died peacefully Tuesday, August 25, in Nashville, Tennessee, according to a statement announcing her death. A cause of death was not immediately disclosed.

“A rhinestone life that shone bright enough for the world to see,” the statement said, describing Parton as an inspiration whose music, wit, warmth and kindness made people feel like family.

“Dolly Parton’s legacy is one of love, compassion, and resilience,” it added. “With a seven-decade career, she inspired multiple generations of artists and fans with her music and an unwavering commitment to making the world a better place.”

Parton’s death comes more than a year after the loss of her husband, Carl Thomas Dean, who died in 2025. The couple had been married for 59 years.

From Tennessee poverty to global superstar

Born Dolly Rebecca Parton on January 19, 1946, in rural Tennessee, Parton rose from an impoverished childhood in the Great Smoky Mountains to become one of the most recognizable entertainers in the world.

Her career stretched across seven decades and far beyond country music. She wrote hundreds of songs, sold millions of records and collected numerous honors throughout a career that established her as one of the most influential singer-songwriters of her generation.

Among her greatest compositions was “I Will Always Love You,” which Parton originally recorded in the 1970s and which Whitney Houston later transformed into a global hit.

Parton also became a movie star through films including “9 to 5” and “Steel Magnolias,” while her unmistakable blonde hair, rhinestone-covered wardrobe, humor and self-deprecating wit made her a pop-culture icon far beyond Nashville.

A legacy bigger than music

Parton was equally celebrated for her philanthropy. Her Imagination Library has provided books to children around the world, while her charitable work extended to education, disaster relief and health initiatives.

According to the announcement, Parton requested a small, private service for immediate family. Her family asked that donations be made to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in lieu of flowers.

Her death closes one of the most extraordinary chapters in American popular music—a career that crossed generations and genres while turning a girl from rural Tennessee into a global cultural icon.
