An abandoned car in Quezon City that had sat untouched for over a decade has finally been removed by authorities—much to the frustration of residents who had waited more than a decade for action.
A white 2013 Kia Sportage had sat at the corner of Camaro and Hillman streets in Fairview, Quezon City, since late 2014. Seemingly new and unused when it first appeared, no one could trace its owner, as the car bore no license plate.
Its mysterious origin and unusual placement along a major thoroughfare earned it a cult following, even gaining its own Google Maps pin labeled “Fairview’s Finest Ang Abandonadong Kia.” It remained largely untouched until the COVID-19 pandemic, when hooligans began to vandalize the car and steal its parts.
The Quezon City Police Department (QCPD) finally removed the car on March 26 this year, drawing mixed reactions from the community.
From landmark to liability
Some had deemed the car a fixture in the neighborhood, even noting it as a landmark during road travels and commutes. Netizens especially found fun in speculating its backstory and sharing commentary on its unusual presence, with one internet user calling it a “contemporary monument to urban decay.”
But the larger concern that plagued surrounding residents was why it took nearly 12 years to remove the car, raising serious public safety and sanitation concerns. The car collected dirt and grime over the years, eventually attracting vandals and thieves. It also blocked a subdivision gate despite a clearly displayed “No Parking” sign.
The QCPD said it had attempted to trace the car’s original owner to no avail. The car has since been dismantled into scrap and transported to a junkyard in San Mateo, Rizal, for proper disposal.
It survived a decade of weather, a pandemic, and vandals. Now, the infamous Fairview Kia is finally gone. Read about the community’s mixed reactions to the removal of this ‘monument to urban decay.’
