Say goodbye to charging stations—Hyundai’s solar-powered electric camper brings futuristic “Slow Travel” to the great outdoors.

South Korean automaker Hyundai has revealed its STARIA Camper Concept, an electric vehicle designed for off-grid adventures. Unveiled as a prototype at the CMT trade fair in Stuttgart in January 2026, the camper’s standout feature is a solar panel integrated into its roof. This system allows the vehicle to recharge without plugging in, extending its driving range and powering onboard appliances like a small refrigerator and a portable shower.

The system can extend driving range or support off-grid autonomy for truly adventurous campers by powering onboard features such as a 36-litre refrigerator, a portable shower, and the cabin temperature control system, enabling longer, more self-sufficient journeys.

Designed for maximum utility

Based on the futuristic STARIA multi-purpose vehicle, the concept is built for convenience:

  • Expandable Living: A power-operated pop-up roof provides standing headroom or an elevated sleeping loft.
  • Modular Interior: Rotating front seats and flat-folding rear benches transform the cabin into a comfortable sleeping area for two in seconds.
  • Smart Privacy: The rear windows utilize electrochromic “smart glass,” allowing travelers to switch from transparent to opaque via a touchscreen—perfect for privacy and heat reduction without the need for bulky curtains.

High-voltage performance

While the solar roof handles the “living” energy, the drivetrain is built for the long haul. The STARIA Camper supports ultra-fast charging, capable of boosting the battery from 10% to 80% in approximately 20 minutes when connected to a high-speed DC charger.

This innovation is an example of Power to the People: people are taking back control trend by TrendWatching.com. Asia has long grappled with a range of systemic issues, ranging from inefficient governments to gender and racial discrimination. Frustrated by the system, individual citizens and innovators are flexing their digital superpowers, taking matters into their own hands and creating the change they want to see – whether that’s regulating elections, or broadening access to essential services. As Asian consumers continue their grassroots efforts, collective action will play a powerful role. Consumers will expect brands to support them in this fight.
