Indie Studio Heartbreak’s animated short about a chef and a siren brings Filipino queer storytelling to the global stage at Annecy Film Festival.
After years of anticipation, indie animation studio Studio Heartbreak has officially confirmed that “The Lovers” will make its world premiere at the prestigious Annecy International Animation Film Festival this June 2026, marking a huge moment not only for independent animation, but also for Filipino representation on the global stage.
Created by a young team of Filipino artists who began developing the project while still in college, “The Lovers” is part of a growing wave of locally made animated works proving that Philippine animation can stand alongside international productions at major festivals and markets.

The adult animated short follows Sara, a seafood chef from Binondo, Manila, whose life changes after meeting Sirena, an actual siren. Set within a dark fantasy version of the Philippines, the film blends romance, mythology, and queer storytelling while incorporating distinctly Filipino settings, visual influences, and cultural elements.
Its selection for Annecy comes at a time when Filipino animation is receiving increasing international attention. Alongside projects such as “Zsazsa Zaturnnah” and “58th,” “The Lovers” reflects a new generation of Filipino animators bringing original stories and local perspectives to global audiences.
Studio Heartbreak also revealed that after completing its festival run, “The Lovers” will eventually be released for free on YouTube, continuing the studio’s commitment to making independent animation widely accessible.
