From Manila to Tokyo: VMX’s “Relyebo” makes history as first Filipino streaming film set for Japanese remake, opening global doors.

VMX continues to strengthen its international presence as its 2022 original film “Relyebo” (The Reliever) becomes the first title from the streaming platform to receive an overseas remake, marking a major milestone for Filipino cinema.

Through collaborations VMX has partnered with Japan’s Okura Pictures, one of the country’s oldest and most prominent independent film studios, for the Japanese adaptation of the acclaimed erotic drama originally written and directed by Crisanto Aquino.

The partnership signals a significant step forward for VMX, formerly known as Vivamax, as it expands its reach beyond streaming and into global content adaptation. As the platform continues to gain international audiences, this latest development highlights the growing appeal of Filipino storytelling across borders.

Originally released in 2022, “Relyebo” stars multi-awarded actor Sean de Guzman and actress Christine Bermas. The film follows the story of a married security guard whose dangerous fantasies intensify after becoming infatuated with a mysterious tenant. While the Japanese remake will retain the film’s core narrative, several elements will be adjusted to better reflect Japanese culture and sensibilities.

Director Crisanto Aquino described the adaptation as both an honor and a win for Philippine cinema.

“Not many Filipino films get to become source material for international remakes,” Aquino shared, emphasizing the significance of seeing local storytelling resonate on a global scale.

Meanwhile, Bermas is reportedly in discussions for a possible cameo appearance in the Japanese version.

Vincent del Rosario III, chief executive officer of Viva Communications Inc., expressed optimism that the project will pave the way for more international collaborations involving VMX originals.

“We believe this adaptation highlights the universal appeal of our stories and opens the door for more VMX titles to be reimagined for audiences around the world.”

Production for the Japanese remake is scheduled to begin in September 2026, ushering in a promising new chapter for VMX as it continues to elevate Filipino content on the global stage.
