Directed by Carl Papa, “58th” revisits the Maguindanao massacre, now seen by the world at IFFR 2026.

“Some dreams take over a decade,” declared Nessa Valdellon, GMA senior vice president for Public Affairs.

For Valdellon, that dream was “58th,” the animated documentary now making waves at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, which runs until February 8 in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

“Some dreams start in whispers and end up on international screens,” Valdellon continued. “‘58th,’ our animated documentary for Filipino Gen Z, was first pitched by Ely Del Rosario, brought to life by Johnson Tam and Ian Carlos Simbulan, and perfected after Carl Papa joined the journey.”

GMA senior vice president for Public Affairs Nessa Valdellon shared on Facebook that her “dream project,” the animated documentary “58th,” is now screening in the Netherlands.

From ‘Iti Mapukpukaw’ to Rotterdam: A global stage for justice

Papa, known for the 2024 Oscar entry “Iti Mapukpukaw,” brings his signature depth and sensitivity to the project. Together with GMA Public Affairs and GMA Pictures, the team has crafted a story that is both haunting and necessary.

“58th” tells the story of the horrific crime in Maguindanao that shook the world 15 years ago and the family that has been waiting for justice ever since. “Now the world is watching… and Filipino stories are louder than ever,” Valdellon added.

The film stars Glaiza de Castro, Ricky Davao, Mikoy Morales, Biboy Ramirez, Marco Masa, and Zyren dela Cruz.
