Cup of Joe’s Gian Bernardino sketches characters in notebook to separate stage persona from dual film roles.
From performing on stage to making his mark on the big screen, Cup of Joe lead Gian Bernardino is taking on a new challenge as he ventures into his first major film role in Viva Films’ upcoming Filipino adaptation of the hit Thai horror-comedy “Pee Mak.”
While acting is still a developing craft for Bernardino, he already has previous acting experience. For his role as “Bunak” in “Pee Mak PH,” the newcomer underwent workshops and focused on building a distinct character that would separate him from the Gian audiences already know.
“Nag characterization ako. Currently mayroon akong dalawang roles. Sinabi noong nag- workshop sa akin na dapat distinct ang characters ko, so inis-sketch ko siya then kina-characterize ko siya in a way kapag makita nila on screen mabubura si Gian Bernardino na nakikita nila on stage,” he shared during the media conference on Wednesday.
For Bernardino, the opportunity to explore both acting and music is something he considers rare, especially after developing his passion for the arts at a young age.
“Ever since noong bata ako, feeling ko I was really born into arts and to be able to do that in film and in music at the same time is really a once-in-a-blue-moon kind of opportunity, kaya sobrang nagpapasalamat po ako kasi nabigyan ako ng pagkakataon,” he said.
Apart from “Pee Mak PH,” Bernardino is also set to appear in another film under Regal Entertainment. With two film projects lined up, he admitted feeling pressured, especially as he works alongside seasoned actors.
“Nakaka-pressure rin po kasi for both films ang mga kasama ko po na mga artista ay sobrang experienced na talaga, kaya sobrang it pushes me pa further to learn about this craft and work on myself,” Bernardino said.
The Filipino adaptation stars Wilbert Ross and Bea Binene, with Vandolph Quizon, Jairus Aquino, TJ Valderrama, and Bernardino forming the barkada at the center of the story.
The project marks another milestone for Bernardino following his signing of a solo management and film contract with Viva Artists Agency and Viva Films on June 23, 2026. “Pee Mak PH,” directed by Victor Villanueva, is set to premiere in cinemas on October 14.
