₱1.62B eyed for forest protection, flood, mitigation, and community livelihoods.

The government is proposing to nearly triple funding for its national forest program in 2027, with the ₱1.62-billion allocation intended to support forest restoration, environmental protection, and livelihood opportunities for communities.

The proposed budget for the Expanded National Greening Program (NGP) is 186.32% higher than the ₱565 million allocated for 2026, according to the Department of Budget and Management (DBM).

Under the proposed 2027 National Expenditure Program, the funding will support the planting, maintenance, and protection of 18,645 hectares of forests and other suitable lands nationwide.

The program also aims to provide livelihood opportunities for upland and lowland communities, including Indigenous peoples, while encouraging their participation in forest protection and sustainable management.

The DBM said forests help prevent soil erosion and flooding, preserve biodiversity, absorb carbon emissions, and sustain communities that depend on forest resources.

The proposed NGP allocation forms part of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) proposed ₱29.47-billion budget for 2027.

However, the budget proposal does not specify how the additional funding will be distributed among forest planting, maintenance, protection, and community livelihood initiatives.

The allocation remains subject to the government’s budget approval process.
