Filipino farmers explore higher-value markets in Europe as demand for premium produce is assessed.

Guimaras mangoes have officially reached Spain, marking another milestone in the country’s efforts to bring one of its most prized agricultural products to European consumers.

The arrival in Madrid forms part of a pioneering 100-kilogram test shipment to Europe, following the fruit’s entry through Brussels, Belgium. The mangoes are also set to be introduced in other major cities, including The Hague, Paris, and Berlin, as exporters continue to assess demand and market opportunities in the region.

Long regarded as among the country’s finest fruits, Guimaras mangoes are the Philippines’ first registered Geographical Indication (GI) product, which recognizes the link between a product’s quality and its place of origin.

Farmers in the island province are known for producing mangoes distinguished by their distinct sweetness, aroma, and flavor profile.

In addition to testing European palates, the shipment will also provide insights into logistics, shelf life, and the feasibility of supplying fresh mangoes to premium European markets.

The initiative marks the first time Guimaras mangoes have been exported to Europe and the first European shipment undertaken by a woman-led enterprise, Guimaras Wonder Farms.

With the test shipment’s success, growers and exporters could open new opportunities for farmers and small businesses seeking access to higher-value markets abroad, where consumers are often willing to pay more for premium and traceable produce.
