“Desaparesidos” comes alive in a limited staged reading honoring victims of dictatorship this September 26 to 27.
As the Philippines nears the anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law, Lualhati Bautista’s “Desaparesidos” will return to the stage through a limited staged reading tackling dictatorship, disappearance, and the struggle to remember.
The production is the second installment of “Bantayog: Alaala at Gunita,” a staged reading cycle centered on dictatorship and “the architecture of remembrance.”
Adapted for the stage by Guelan Varela-Luarca, Desaparesidos will be directed by Varela-Luarca and Kat Batara. The cast includes Sheenly Gener, Marco Viña, Jojit Lorenzo, Jam Binay, Ge Villamil, Yshma Aquino, Gio Gahol, Maliana Beran, and Toni Go-Yadao.
Bautista’s words remain central to the story’s political weight, “Lahat ng panahon ay hindi panahon ng takot at pagtitimpi. Lahat ng panahon ay panahon ng pagpapasya.”
The line echoes the production’s focus on confronting painful chapters of history rather than allowing them to disappear from public memory.
The announcement also drew reactions online, including one netizen who wrote, “Finally! Super sakto sa Martial Law anniversary. Sana mas mapromote din to sa students.“
“Desaparesidos” is set to run on September 26 and 27, 2026, at 7:30 PM at the Power Mac Center Spotlight Blackbox Theater, Circuit Makati.
Presented as part of Ayala Land and Circuit Makati’s Palanca Awardees Residency Program, the staging arrives at a time when conversations about Martial Law, historical memory, and the younger generation’s understanding of the past continue to surface.
