Novo Ecija film in Puregold CinePanalo 2026 satirizes OFW pressure

Director Lloyd Pereira turns one woman’s Canadian visa into an entire barrio’s obsession.

Emerging as the first Ilocano film in the Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival 2026, Novo Ecijano writer-director Lloyd Pereira’s satirical comedy, “Bumtak Sara ti Nuangen,” offers a sharp look at Filipino migration culture and the dreams attached to working abroad.

The Philippines is home to millions of overseas Filipino workers, making it rare for a local community not to have at least one family member abroad. Yet in “Bumtak Sara ti Nuangen,” a visa approval becomes more than a private family milestone as one woman’s opportunity to work abroad turns into the entire barrio’s obsession.

Set in Barrio Sinukuan, the film follows Gabriella “Ella” Isinilang (Belle Francisco), whose Canadian visa approval makes her the first person from the town to go abroad. Her deeply personal quest to find her estranged mother is soon overshadowed by an opportunistic barangay captain, eccentric neighbors, and their growing demands.

The film’s title, which roughly translates to English as “The Carabao’s Horns Have Cracked,” is an Ilocano idiom used by parents to scold sleepy children still in bed past morning. Pereira uses the expression as a metaphor for an extraordinary event that disrupts the rhythm of an ordinary barrio, awakening the community to the possibility of something bigger.

Joining Francisco is an ensemble cast portraying the colorful characters surrounding Ella. Riya Miranda plays “Lola Chora,” her grumpy and sentimental grandmother; Tina dela Cruz plays “Fe,” her opportunistic aunt; Alfredo Montano plays “Lolo Idong,” her pragmatic grandfather; Christina Simon plays “Aling Busyang,” the loud-mouthed and nosy neighbor; Rani Caldoza plays “Kapitan Rey,” a self-centered trapo barangay captain; and Alison Araña plays “Jenifer,” Ella’s childhood best friend.

The film looks beyond one young woman’s journey abroad to examine the pressures and romanticized ideas woven into Filipino migration culture. It explores how personal grief and abandonment can be exploited by local politics, while one person’s departure becomes a community’s imagined path toward a better life.

The film also subtly examines how teleseryes can shape perceptions of life abroad, creating unrealistic and deeply rooted hopes among marginalized communities. Through Ella’s story, Pereira turns the familiar OFW narrative into a satire about the expectations placed on Filipinos who leave home to work abroad.

“At its core, ‘Bumtak Sara ti Nuangen’ looks at the desperate hope for upward mobility that forces families to pin their entire future on a single person’s departure,” Pereira says. “I want audiences to recognize the bittersweet cycle where leaving is painted as a heroic triumph, even when it is driven by a quiet, lingering desperation.”

While Ella’s story is not personal to the filmmaker, the community depicted in the film draws from Pereira’s observations of his hometown and childhood in a barangay in Nueva Ecija. The characters’ names are inspired by real people from his province, while their personalities and arcs in the film are fictionalized.

Pereira dedicates the film as a love letter to the community that shaped him and the people who surrounded him throughout childhood. His experiences at home, both fond and difficult, became part of the foundation for the film’s portrayal of rural life, migration, and ambition.

“It is a tribute to the community that gave me the tools to leave and the memories that keep me coming back. I want to show that while home is rarely simple and often frustrating, it is the only place that truly knows our names and the magnitude of our dreams,” Pereira says.

“Bumtak Sara ti Nuangen” is part of the Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival 2026, which will screen from September 23 to October 4 at Gateway Cineplex and select Ayala Cinemas.
