What laws should protect Filipino astronauts if the country one day sends humans into space?
That’s the question the Philippine Space Agency is posing to law students nationwide through this year’s Space Law Writing Contest, part of the annual Philippine Space Week celebration.
Open to all law students nationwide, PhilSA opened the Space Law Writing contest on June 19 as part of the Philippine Space Week 2026 celebration.
Interested participants are asked to submit their entries answering the question: “As the Philippines prepares for human spaceflight in the future, what domestic legal frameworks should be in place to ensure the welfare of Filipino astronauts?”
According to the agency, the contest “aims to foster a deeper understanding of space law” and encourage participants to think about the important role that space policies will play in shaping the Philippines’ future space activities.
Entries will be accepted until July 22. Authors of the top three essays will be awarded and given cash prizes on Philippine Space Week 2026 happening on Aug. 8 to 14.
The contest marks its third year since it was first held in 2024. This year, it is one of the three other contests announced by the PhilSA for the week-long celebration that aims to highlight space awareness among Filipinos.
Also open are the 2026 GeoGuhit and Yamang Kalawakan Poster-Making Contest, where Filipinos can submit space-themed artworks using GPS-enabled technologies and traditional art media, respectively.
