As we remember those who have passed away, remembering these tips is crucial

Family reunions, visiting cemeteries, and lighting up candles—the season of Undas is a special day for Filipinos to commemorate and pray for those who have dearly departed.

While the season is the perfect time to remember those who have come and passed, it is also important to remember that Undas comes with unforeseen situations. Between huge crowds, fire hazards, and the possibility of theft, you’ll need to be on your guard under these circumstances.

Here’s a go-to guide to get you through the season of Undas, free from danger and worries.

1. Safeguard your home

During Undas, it is expected for people to leave their houses, presenting a perfect opportunity for burglars. Make sure all doors and windows are locked. Unplug all devices and turn off gas tanks to minimize the risk of fire.

2. Check the weather

Before leaving, check the weather forecast, so you can prepare accordingly. Bring umbrellas and raincoats in case of rain, and a fan (a handheld or mini fan works well) to keep yourself cool against the heat.

3. Avoid bringing deadly objects and items associated with prohibited activities

Safety might start from one’s self, but it also includes everyone around you. To provide a safe environment for other visitors, refrain from bringing alcohol, loud speakers, gambling implements, and dangerous items such as guns or knives.

4. Always check yourself and your surroundings

Danger might be lurking anywhere, even in a cemetery. When lighting up candles, make sure to properly place them away from combustible items to avoid fire hazards. If you have someone with you, watch over each other, and you may also want to share your location through GPS-based apps.

5. Identify the closest medical and police booths

To ensure a safe and smooth visit, local police stations and medical units usually set up booths near the cemeteries. Know the location of these posts in case you need emergency assistance.

6. Pack enough food and water

Paying a visit to the cemetery might turn out to be exhausting, so prepare light snacks and water to replenish your energy. Given the heat, you might also want to bring a sports drink to avoid dehydration.

7. Prepare a first aid kit and other essential items

Accidents might happen in the cemetery, especially in crowded areas, so keep a first aid kit handy to treat any minor injuries. You might also want to prepare other essential items such as IDs, name tags with addresses for young children, and pocket money.

The season of Undas may not be hassle-free, but arming yourself with these tips might help you have a safer trip as you visit your loved ones.
