The 51st Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) Gabi ng Parangal spotlighted a changing landscape in Philippine cinema as films tackling social themes, bold storytelling, and technical excellence dominated this year’s awards night on December 27 at the Dusit Thani Hotel in Makati City.
Leading the pack was “I’mPerfect,” written and directed by Sigrid Andrea Bernardo, which took home Best Picture trophy.
The film stood out for its intimate portrayal of love between two adults with Down syndrome, earning praise for both its representation and emotional depth.
Actress Krystel Go further elevated the film’s triumph with a Best Actress win, while the project also claimed Best Ensemble, underscoring the strength of its collective performances.
Meanwhile, “UnMarry” proved to be a strong contender across multiple categories, landing Second Best Picture and securing major awards for screenplay, editing, and acting performances. The film’s showing reflected the jury’s appreciation for layered storytelling and strong character-driven narratives.
Police-action drama “Manila’s Finest” and Vice Ganda-starrer “Call Me Mother” shared Third Best Picture honor, highlighting the wide genre range represented in this year’s festival—from socially grounded stories to mainstream crowd favorites with progressive themes.
Vice Ganda was named Best Actor for “Call Me Mother,” which also received the Gender Sensitivity Award.
With wins spread across drama, comedy, and genre films, the MMFF Gabi ng Parangal reinforced the festival’s role as a platform for both artistic risk-taking and mass appeal, offering moviegoers a diverse slate of Filipino stories as MMFF entries continue their nationwide cinema run.
