The 50 beautiful candidates of this year’s Miss Universe Philippines dazzled in their national costumes, and of course, some candidates found ways to stand out from the rest.

Among them was Miss Negros Occidental Alex Colmenares, who captured attention with a costume proudly inspired by Negros heritage — a Spanish-style sardines concept.

On social media, Filipino designer Ruffy Itaas shared the inspiration behind the candidate’s look, which he described as “Victorias: Pride of the Visayan Seas.”

According to Itaas, the inspiration draws “from the coastal heritage of Negros Occidental and the iconic Victorias Food Corporation of Victorias City. This national costume honors the thriving sardine industry while highlighting the coastal life and hardworking fishermen of Negros,” he wrote.

For Itaas, the design was not only meant to showcase Negros to the universe, but also to pay homage to the province’s identity.

Sardines are among the country’s premier and most essential fish species, serving as an affordable and vital source of protein in the Philippines.

A bold sardine can silhouette stands at the heart of the costume, symbolizing industry, innovation, and resilience. The shimmering silver and blue bodice with Filipiniana sleeves mirrors the movement of sardines beneath the sea, while the playful headpiece celebrates abundance and the region’s rich culinary tradition.

More than just a costume, it is a tribute to the pride, creativity, and identity of Negros Occidental.

Currently, Ahtisa Manalo is the reigning queen, while 50 Filipina beauties are vying to represent the Philippines in the upcoming edition of Miss Universe in Puerto Rico this November.
