Ruby Ruiz leads special screening of ‘First Light’ in Sydney

Veteran actress reveals intense preparation for Sister Yolanda as film heads to Philippine and Australian cinemas.

“I want to be very honest with this audience. I’ve made some preparations. I had to do my research. I consulted two nuns.”

Speaking at a special screening at the Sydney Opera House, actress Ruby Ruiz didn’t sugarcoat her preparation for the role of Sister Yolanda, a nun caught in a crisis of faith after a tragic death linked to institutional corruption.

Director James J. Robinson had nothing but praise for the actress. “I’m so happy that she can be here with us,” said James during the special screening. “She carries this entire film on her back. Without her and these three other women, I will not be here. We will not be here. So thank you so much to these ladies.”

The film, which has already made the rounds in international festivals, is set to hit Philippine cinemas on June 24, before opening in Australian theaters on July 9.

Ruby, for her part, seemed just as moved by the experience, posting about how grateful she was to screen the film again in Sydney. 

“Feeling very lucky to be screening this film for the second time at the Sydney Opera House,” Ruby posted on her social media account. She also shared behind-the-scenes moments with the cast and crew, including a breezy day at Manly Beach, proof that even heavy films come with light, in-between moments.
