Veteran director lauds longtime collaborator’s vision, leadership, and high-risk execution in explosive Netflix action sequel.
Award-winning filmmaker Erik Matti has paid tribute to longtime collaborator Richard Somes in a heartfelt behind-the-scenes post from “BuyBust: The Undesirables.”
Sharing a video from the set, Matti reflected on reuniting with Somes after years apart, calling it a sentimental moment. He tapped Somes to direct the season’s high-stakes car chase finale and praised his leadership, confidence, and command of the crew.
Matti also noted how impressed he was while listening to Somes’ plans during pre-production.
“I usually meddle with a director whenever I hear a shoot strategy that doesn’t make sense logically and efficiently,” Matti wrote. “But listening to how he will take on this crazy scene just feels like we were born on the same principle: the harder it is, the better everything will turn out to be.”
“Always an honor to serve, Direk,” Somes replied in the comments. “Even if schedules are harder to line up these days, you know where to find me. I’ll always be there when needed. Your soldier, always.”
The two filmmakers share a long creative history. Somes served as production designer and action choreographer for Matti’s acclaimed film “On the Job.” They also collaborated on “Dos Ekis,” which Somes co-wrote and Matti directed.
Their partnership has helped shape some of Philippine cinema’s most memorable action projects, making their reunion on “BuyBust: The Undesirables” a full-circle moment. They also worked together on films such as “Scorpio Nights 2,” “Gagamboy,” and “Prosti.”
“Gasigabong naman ni e!!!” Matti added, capping off a post filled with admiration for a collaborator he has trusted for decades.
“BuyBust: The Undesirables” is scheduled to premiere on Netflix in 2026, though an exact release date has not yet been announced.
