Tropical Hut exits the supermarket business as last Foodmart on Panay Avenue closes

Closing-out sale at the Quezon City branch signals the end of the homegrown chain’s grocery operations after more than six decades.

Tropical Hut appears to be closing the final chapter of its supermarket business, with its last remaining Foodmart on Panay Avenue in Quezon City holding a closing-out sale ahead of its scheduled closure at the end of July.

Photos shared by customers show heavily discounted grocery items as the branch clears out its remaining inventory. Tropical Hut has yet to publicly announce the closure or disclose its plans for the site.

The development marks a significant milestone for the homegrown brand, which traces its roots to a grocery business established in 1962 before expanding into supermarkets and eventually launching the Tropical Hut Hamburger chain. Over the decades, the restaurant business grew into the company’s best-known operation, while its grocery arm gradually shrank amid competition from larger supermarket operators.

The Panay Avenue branch is believed to be the company’s last remaining Foodmart, following the closure of other supermarket locations over the years.

While the grocery business is winding down, Tropical Hut’s restaurant operations continue across Luzon, with more than 20 branches serving its signature burgers and other classic menu items.

The closure of the Panay Avenue Foodmart marks the end of an era for a business that introduced generations of Filipinos to both neighborhood grocery shopping and one of the country’s oldest homegrown fast-food brands.
