Julia Barretto puts Fyang Smith on the spot as Maricel Soriano praises her talent and confidence at ‘“Haunted Carnival” event.
Newbie actress Fyang Smith received a strong vote of confidence from fellow actor Julia Barretto and industry veteran Maricel Soriano as they came together for Regal Entertainment’s Metro Manila Film Festival entry, “Haunted Carnival.”
During the film’s media launch, Soriano openly praised the newcomer, signaling what many saw as a passing-of-the-torch moment. Fans have even pointed out Smith’s resemblance to the “Diamond Star,” making the recognition more notable.
“Marunong siya,” Soriano emphasized.
“Matalino siya at marunong siyang magsalita, natutuwa ako lalo na no’ng nakausap ko siya,” she added.
Soriano also expressed admiration for both of her co-stars’ work ethic and talent.
“Magaling siya, natutuwa ako kapag nakikita ko siyang mahusay,” she said of Smith. “Si Julia natutuwa [rin] ako.”
Smith’s casting alongside established names highlights her fast-rising profile in the industry. Early in her career, she has already worked with respected actresses, which she acknowledged during the event.
“Dahil first ko naka-work na senior is si Ms. Dina (Bonnevie), my first mom, feeling ko mahirap gawin iyong susundan kasi sobrang iconic niya, pero siya yung nilu-look up ko–and, of course, my mom (referring to Maricel),” she said.
The launch also showcased the easy chemistry among the cast. Barretto kept the mood light by putting Smith in a playful “hot seat,” asking about her inspirations in the industry.
“Ikaw Fyang, sino ang role model mo gaya nila Ms. Maricel? Kaninong career path ang dream mo?” Barretto asked.
Beyond the lighthearted exchanges, the camaraderie among the cast is shaping up as one of the film’s key draws.
Joining Smith, Barretto, and Soriano in the cast are John Arcilla, RK Bagatsing, and James Reid.
Directed by Joey de Guzman, “Haunted Carnival” is set to premiere on Christmas Day as part of this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival.
