Roman Superhighway in Bataan likened to ‘Mario Kart’ over road blocks

The video is set to music from the Nintendo “Mario Kart” video game franchise, with the vehicle avoiding barricades placed in a zig-zag pattern. “Mario Kart Roman Super Highway Edition,” the user captioned the video.

The Metro Bataan Development Authority placed barricades along the Limay portion of the 68-kilometer highway to warn motorists of potholes, according to an advisory dated September 6.

Other portions of the highway in Limay were also blocked with barriers due to flooding during storms that hit the province in the past weeks.

Many netizens found the clip humorous. However, many also expressed safety concerns due to the winding, uphill road segment of the highway and the placement of the barriers.

“Dapat binangga mo. May lalabas dun coins,” joked one commenter, referencing the video game.

“Sana kapag nasira ‘yung kotse, sasagutin ng govt.,” said another commenter.

Nonstop rains from both the southwestern monsoon (habagat) and typhoons entering the country have caused flooding across Luzon and parts of Visayas, with some areas also facing problems linked to inadequate public infrastructure.

The video and subsequent reactions highlighted concerns over road works, disaster risk mitigation, and safety protocols by authorities, underscoring the need for practical solutions that protect citizens rather than put them at risk.
