Filipinos in France warned over illegal cockfighting

Violators could face up to 3 years in prison, over ₱3M fine.

The Philippine Embassy in Paris has warned Filipinos in France against engaging in cockfighting after receiving reports from French authorities about illegal gambling and cockfighting activities involving members of the Filipino community.

The Embassy said the activities have also been linked to complaints about disturbances and littering.

Cockfighting is illegal in France, and the Embassy said those involved could face up to three years in prison and a €45,000 (about ₱3.25 million) fine under French law for animal cruelty.

The warning comes as the Embassy reminded Filipinos living and working in France that they are required to follow French laws, regardless of whether an activity is common or legal in the Philippines.

The advisory does not identify where the reported cockfighting activities took place or how many Filipinos were involved.

It also does not say whether arrests or criminal charges have already been filed in connection with the reported activities.

The Embassy urged the Filipino community to observe French laws and maintain good relations with their French hosts.
