The MMFF Summer Edition’s Best Picture winner makes its raw, intimate stage debut this Valentine’s Day at Circuit Makati.

If you missed the tension of “About Us But Not About Us” during the 2023 MMFF Summer Edition, you will soon have a closer look. The acclaimed psychological drama is transitioning to the theater.

It brings its original lead actors along for the stage debut.

Romnick Sarmenta and Elijah Canlas return to the roles that earned them widespread praise. They will reprise the characters Eric and Lance for a live audience.

Romnick Sarmenta plays Eric, a literature professor in “About Us But Not About Us.”

This transition is a natural fit. Even as a film, the story felt deeply theatrical. It takes place mostly during a single meal. A literature professor and his former student engage in a high-stakes game of wits. They peel back layers of trauma and deception. The live format adds new vulnerability to this sophisticated confrontation.

This transition is more than a retelling; it is a homecoming. Original writer and director Jun Robles Lana adapted the script himself. He reimagined the story specifically for an intimate stage setting. Multi-awarded director Tuxqs Rutaquio helms the production. His direction ensures the story maintains its visceral edge in a black box theater.

An expanded ensemble

While Sarmenta and Canlas provide the emotional heartbeat, the cast also expands. The pivotal role of Marcus features two industry heavyweights. Veteran actor Epy Quizon and director-actor Andoy Ranay will alternate in the role.

The production also features a formidable ensemble of theater stalwarts. The cast includes Herbie Go, Geraldine Villamil, and Noel Rayos. Their presence adds depth and experience to the production. This team creates a synergy that promises a haunting experience. It aims to be as unforgettable as the cinematic version.

Catch it live: Valentine’s Day premiere

This debut is a significant chapter for IdeaFirst Live. It follows their successful production of “Anino sa Likod ng Buwan” last year. This play is part of the Palanca Awardees Residency Program by Ayala Land and Circuit Makati. The production takes place at the Power Mac Center Spotlight Black Box Theater in Circuit Makati.

The show runs from February 14 to March 8. Tickets are available now through Ticket2Me.
