Singer opposes unauthorized use of voice and songs, says AI should empower, not exploit, creators.

Filipino singer-songwriter Jireh Lim recently took to social media to voice his concerns regarding the unethical use of artificial intelligence in the music industry.

While clarifying that he is not entirely opposed to AI technology itself, Lim took a firm stand against utilizing it to profit from an artist’s music, voice, or recordings without their explicit permission.

The “Buko” and “Magkabilang Mundo” singer highlighted the harsh reality that many creators face when their work is exploited digitally. He urged his followers to imagine a scenario where a song amasses millions of streams and views, yet the original writer does not earn a single cent from its massive success.

“That’s not innovation—that’s taking advantage of the people who created the music in the first place,” Lim expressed.

Speaking from his own experience in the industry, the artist emphasized the immense amount of time, sacrifice, and heart that is poured into crafting every single track. He firmly advocated for the rights of his fellow musicians, asserting that creators rightfully deserve consent, proper credit, and fair compensation for their art.

With AI access democratized for users to input and remix another artist’s music, a growing trend of AI-assisted music generation has been observed, such as the viral “Brazilian dance” TikTok track. Lim’s music has also been remixed by other users, “reimagining” the melody of his song “Pagsuko” into a rock cover or an 80s-inspired tune.

Ultimately, Lim stated that technology should be utilized to empower artists, rather than serve as a tool to profit from their work without authorization.
