‘Someone, Someday’ actress sparks debate as she urges industry to break repetitive casting and give actors more range.

“Someone, Someday” actress Kat Galang is stirring conversation online after calling on local producers and directors to stop boxing actors into repetitive roles.

In a recent post featuring black-and-white photos, Galang openly expressed her desire to take on a villain role, saying audiences eventually tire of seeing the same tropes portrayed by the same types of actors.

“Manifesting for a kontrabida role,” she wrote. “Yung mang-aapi naman tayo in absurd choices.”

Her post quickly resonated with netizens and industry figures, sparking discussion about casting practices in the local entertainment scene.

Veteran actress Madeleine Nicolas voiced her support, commenting, “Sana nga! I can totally relate to this statement.”

In her reply, Galang pointed out what she described as the predictability of casting, saying actors are often repeatedly assigned to the same archetypes.

“Kung sinong laging best friend, laging s’ya. Kung sinong laging nanay, laging s’ya. Kung sino laging mayaman na kontrabida, laging s’ya.”

She stressed that this approach limits opportunities and overlooks the range that character actors can bring when given more diverse roles.

Her husband, actor Jal Galang, also joined the discussion, noting that audience preferences may contribute to the cycle. He said viewers often gravitate toward familiar faces, making it harder for actors to break out of established molds.

The exchange also included lighthearted moments, with Jal joking about saving up to produce their own project. Kat replied that they currently had ₱1,700, wondering if it would be enough to fund a film. Jal quipped that the amount could at least cover a GrabFood order, prompting Kat to joke that they would at least have a proper meal on set.

Amid the banter, Jal pointed out that Republic Act No. 11996, or the “Eddie Garcia Law,” requires employers to provide basic necessities such as adequate and nutritious meals to workers.

Content creator-turned-actor Macoy Averilla also expressed support, writing, “Manifesting this for you!!”

Known for her comedic timing and charm, Galang is often cast as the supportive best friend, with roles such as Flo in the 2021 BL series “Ben X Jim” and Bonita Marilet in “Kadenang Ginto.” With her upcoming supporting role in the new romantic thriller series “Someone, Someday,” starring Kathryn Bernardo, audiences have yet to discover what’s next for Kat.
